Future Buller is a project to understand what is at risk, what matters most, and what can we do about it to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the district over the next 50 years.

As a community, we need to work together to adapt and build our resilience to our hazards now and into the future.

To do this, we need to have ongoing two-way conversations across communities, councils and central government agencies. To start, we need you to tell us what matters most to you about Buller, or what you think we should do to adapt to climate risks.

The project has four phases of engagement with the community over the next three years:

  • What matters most to us?

The first stage of this project is about
understanding what you value about your region and what we must try our hardest to protect.

  • What is at risk?

In the next stage, we'll explore the risks within the region and what those might look like in the years to come.

  • What are our options?

In the third phase, we'll collaborate as a community to define the different options, given the risks.

  • Make it happen

Then, we'll agree a plan to start making it happen, step by step.

What does successful engagement look like for Future Buller?

  1. Reaching a wide range of community members with different perspectives.
  2. Getting to a level of acceptance of the adaptation options.
  3. Being clear on the different steps needed to move forward.
  4. Achieving a positive outlook for Buller communities.
  5. Using your ideas and thoughts for climate change planning.

Additional information and initial findings from the first round of community engagement can be found in the Future Buller Community Engagement Report.
